What is a GS1 Barcode?

GS1 barcodes are the global standard for product identification used across retail, healthcare, logistics, and manufacturing. They encode data using Application Identifiers (AIs) that uniquely identify products (GTIN), batches, expiry dates, serial numbers, and more. Our generator supports GS1-128, GS1 QR Code, GS1 DataMatrix, EAN-13, UPC-A, Code 128, Code 39, and ITF-14 formats.

Supported GS1 Barcode Types

GS1-128

GS1-128 (formerly EAN-128) is the most widely used barcode in supply chain and logistics. It supports multiple data fields using Application Identifiers.

GS1 QR Code

GS1 QR Codes encode GS1 Digital Link URIs, enabling both machine scanning and consumer engagement via smartphones.

EAN-13

EAN-13 is the standard retail barcode used worldwide for point-of-sale scanning.

UPC-A

UPC-A is the 12-digit barcode standard used primarily in North American retail.

Common Use Cases

  • Retail product labeling and point-of-sale scanning
  • Supply chain and logistics tracking with batch and serial numbers
  • Healthcare product identification (UDI compliance)
  • Food traceability with expiry date and lot tracking
  • Warehouse inventory management

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between GS1-128 and Code 128?
GS1-128 is a subset of Code 128 that uses a special FNC1 start character and Application Identifiers to structure data according to GS1 standards. Standard Code 128 can encode any alphanumeric data without GS1 formatting rules.
Can I use GS1 QR codes for product packaging?
Yes. GS1 QR codes are increasingly adopted for product packaging, especially when space is limited or when you want to provide consumers with a scannable link to product information via GS1 Digital Link.
What is a GTIN?
GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) is a unique identifier for products in the GS1 system. It comes in formats of 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits (GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13, GTIN-14) and is the foundation of GS1 barcodes.
Do I need a GS1 membership to use these barcodes?
To use GS1 barcodes commercially, you need a GS1 Company Prefix obtained through membership with your local GS1 organization. This tool generates the barcodes โ€” you are responsible for using valid GS1 data.
